The Holy Avenger

Like the warhorse, a knight's sword is one of his closest friends, cherished and always in perfect condition. A holy knight never stays away from the weapon that keeps him alive in times of war and peace alike. A proof of how attached a knight can grow to his sword is that he will very often give a name to it. (setname <avenger name>) A knight of Severan's sword carries the symbols of his faith and it is to his sword that the knight will pray, even if that prayer is the last one, before the battle.

Severan grants every paladin with a fine sword known as the Holy Avenger. It is, when in its maximum level, one of the best weapons available in the Realms. However, when a paladin is first granted with his blade, it is roughly as deadly as my grandmother. The paladin has to offer experience to his Lord to make his sword more powerful. The Avenger has 3 levels of attacks and each on of those has 8 advancement levels. It is estimated that one will need almost 2 million experience points to maximize the attack levels of his avenger, reaching level 8 on all 3 attacks. Such a sword is already quite deadly and will help immensely the newly recruited paladin to his quest for justice in the Realms.

Furthermore, knights can enchant their weapons to make them be even more damaging to their targets. This can be done in exchange for experience again. The enchant level of a Holy Avenger can go up to level 50. While paladins can maximize the attack levels of their swords rather easily and in pretty low levels, enchanting them becomes a rather difficult task. Maximizing the enchant levels is possible only for those at 260 overall level.

You can powerup your sword, advancing its attack levels in the sword room of the guild in the city of Treeth and in the castle, in the room with Eliana. You can enchant it in the Meditation Room of the Serrllachian Castle. You also learn the Holding Option at Eliana.

Most paladins will get their swords quite early in their lives as warriors of Severan. That can be done by praying in the sword room. If by any chance you lose your Avenger, a new one will be provided to you by our Lord if you go and pray in the same place again. The new one will be identical to the one you lost in matters of levels. When a paladin dies, his ghost will quite often still be wielding the Holy Avenger.

There are several commands available to the owner of this sword,

Holy Avenger Name
Command: setname "name"
Description: This allows you to give your avenger a name. This, unlike the naming of your horse, can be done more than one time.

Holy Avenger Status
Command: avenger_status
Description: This will allow you to see what levels you have advanced your avenger. For example, a maxed avenger would have the following statistics:

1st: Level 8
2nd: Level 8
3rd: Level 8
Enchant: 50

Holy Avenger holding option
Command: limbs <1 or 2>
Description: You can hold your Avenger by using one or both hands. This can be done by using the limbs 2 command to make your avenger two-handed or limbs 1 to make it an one-handed weapon. The properties of each one of the holding modes for the Avenger are discussed in the paladin commands page, in the punish section. Briefly, an one handed avenger with a second weapon in the other hand will do more damage and produce more hits in a punish whereas a two handed avenger will do less damage, only 3 hits but will be more difficult for the enemy to parry or dodge these attacks. For charge, since this attack uses one weapon only, it is advised to use the two handed avenger, to do slightly more damage.

To be granted with this ability, you will have to be taught by Eliana at the paladin castle in Serrllach. Just type 'learn holding option' in her room. You will have to trade 500,000 xp for that one.
